About the course
The Nashville Bel Canto Foundation proudly offers the fully-funded Italian Opera Scenes Intensive, a scholarship-based program dedicated to cultivating the next generation of opera talent. This immersive course provides singers with the opportunity to deepen their artistry through the study of Italian operatic repertoire and Bel Canto technique.
Held in Nashville from May 8th to May 22nd, the program includes:
- Daily coaching in diction, music, and acting.
- Masterclasses on style, technique, and stagecraft, led by distinguished opera professionals.
- Three performance opportunities: a mid-course recital, a final showcase of opera scenes with chamber ensemble, and a gala for our donors.
- The potential to be selected for a performance at our annual Piazza Italia fundraiser.

Eligibility
- Prior stage experience, a voice degree (or nearing graduation) with demonstrated technical prociency, and authorization to work in the United States.
- Age Limit: 30 years old.
Required Materials
- Two Italian arias in contrasting styles (including one by Mozart), recorded with high quality audio.
- One Italian art song (excluding selections from the 24 Italian Songs and Arias collection).
- One recommendation letter from a professional in the opera industry.
- Submissions must be shared as YouTube or Vimeo links; full video files will not be accepted.

Once accepted, participants will work on selected pieces tailored to their unique strengths, ensuring a personalized and impactful performance experience.
Acting and Discovery in Opera

A transformative masterclass that unveils the secrets of commanding the stage led by director John Giampietro. From mastering the unwritten rules of opera to unlocking your character’s essence, this session will empower young singers to captivate audiences with confidence and artistry.
John Matsumoto Giampietro is a Brooklyn based stage director of Opera and Theatre, an educator, and writer. Acclaimed for his innovative and propulsive productions, his work has been described as ‘astonishing’ (New York Times) and ‘something to celebrate at any opera company anywhere. I loved it so much, I went back the next day.’ (Parterre Box) John has directed opera and theatre at Tanglewood Music Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Urban Stages, Vermont Shakespeare Festival, Curtis Institute of Music, The Flea Theatre, Yale Opera, Shenandoah Conservatory and NYU Tisch School of the Arts, among others.
John is a Vocal Arts Faculty member and stage director at The Juilliard School where he teaches acting across all degree programs. He is also a faculty member of The Curtis Institute of Music where he teaches acting in the Vocal Studies and Opera Theater Department.
His repertory and devised productions at Juilliard and Curtis include, among others: The Cunning Little Vixen, Faust, The Turn of the Screw, ll Turco in Italia, Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor, There’s Blood Between Us, The ImpresA.I.rio, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, and Curlew River.
He is a frequent director with Youngblood, Ensemble Studio Theater’s Obieaward-winning young writers group. At EST, John directed the NY Times acclaimed production of Year of the Rooster by Olivia Dufault.
John served as the Interim Director of the Chautauqua Opera Conservatory, where he directed several operas including , The Cunning Little Vixen, Hänsel und Gretel, Le nozze di Figaro, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
His writing includes new English dialogue versions of Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor and The ImpresA.I.rio for Juilliard. His English dialogue version of Die Zauberflöte premiered at the Chautauqua Institution. John’s play Strength of God and other grotesques based on Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio, premiered at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, NYC.
In his free time, John is an avid fresh pasta-maker. He loves to invent new shapes and cook for friends and family!

Join us for the culminating performance of our Bel Canto Opera Scenes Intensive, featuring the eight talented participants of our inaugural course. The singers will present a selection of opera scenes, accompanied by piano and string quartet.
